Steven Rosen

Lighting Design

It was Steven’s keen interest in applying theatrical lighting techniques to traditionally non-theatrical environments that led to his founding Available Light in 1992. The originality and grand scale of Steven’s designs are evident in such one-of-a-kind award-winning projects as: The Neural Climber interactive experience at The Franklin Institute, The International Spy Museum in Washington DC, and the architectural lighting and control systems renovation for the National Archives Rotunda—home of the Charter Documents of the United States.

Renowned for his contributions to museum lighting, Steven has received multiple Themed Entertainment Association Awards (THEAs) for his work on The Liberty Science Center, The U-505 at MSI Chicago, The National Museum of the Marine Corps, The National Infantry Museum, and The Reynolds Education Center at Mt. Vernon. His dedication to sustainable design is evident in his commitment to achieving LEED certification for many projects.

Highlighting Steven’s profound impact on the lighting design industry, his talents in both lighting design and leadership have been recognized and celebrated with the prestigious IALD Radiance Award, the LDI Redden Award for Sustained Achievement, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from EdisonReport.com.

Steven holds a BFA from Webster University, an MFA from NYU, and is a Fellow of the International Association of Lighting Designers. He is a Past President of the IALD Education Trust, endows a scholarship program in architectural lighting design, and is a Co-founding Board Member of both Praxis and BusinessOfLight.com. An educator, he served as adjunct faculty in FIT’s graduate program of Exhibit and Experience Design. Steven is passionate about developing the next generation of lighting designers.
